Corsets And Bustiers Have A Field Day

I do not know what anyone was thinking when they came up with the creations of corsets and bustiers. Someone had to have a deviant mind in order to think of making a corset. That thing had to be used as a torture device when they want to make people talk.

I have heard some people mention that people “back in those days” were probably thinner than those of us today. I have to disagree with this opinion. When you look at paintings made of women of the time, they are fairly “meaty”. Hence, the reason I do not believe people were smaller. Thin or athletic women would certainly have been looked down upon.

We hear all the time about breast augmentations, face lifts, tummy tucks and stomach bands. These are all ways to engineer our bodies into what we “see” as excellence. We can eat better and train ourselves to achieve a higher level of standard but, we are never satisfied. It was the same then, as it is the same now.

Corsets were aggravating devices which put women through a living hell. They were thick, binding articles which were originally worn for fashion. Those on a higher monetary level wore these items and, of course, thought of themselves on pedestals. Eventually though, if a woman were to be considered “decent” she wore one or would be thought of as a loose woman.

Bustiers on the other hand were more delicate to a woman’s skin. Bustiers were used to hold up the bust. Any woman who has run without wearing a bra can understand the need to protect the breasts. It may be sexy to some to see a woman who does not use a bra and has them bouncy around but, truth be told, that is not good for the woman’s bosom. The difference between corsets and bustiers is corsets squeezed the body, bustiers lifted the breasts.

The Bustier is what I like to think of as the “original push-up” bra. It fit snugly but, was not as discomforting as the corset. The bustier worked by moving the breasts in an upward fashion. There also is a tapering of the waist, which also gives that feminine look. Thus, this gives a fuller look and seems to be what men enjoy seeing.

I have looked and except on rare occasions, it is very difficult to find “antique” corsets. Because of the damage which could be caused by washing, once corsets had finished their use, they were mostly discarded. Probably because of how a corset molded to the woman (who wore the monstrosity) there was not much sense in keeping it for generations.

I believe most people have someone in their ancestry who has worn types of lingerie corsets and bustiers. Bustiers seem to be the most comfortable of the two. I am not sure how I would have felt had I lived in the times which have passed. Women have gone through so much to try to be appealing to men in their society. It had to have taken most of their day to accomplish such beauty. Was it worth all the trouble?
